American Sign Language - Intermediate II
All Genders Course; Prerequisite - Successful completion of at least three years of high school ASL; Full Year Course
Course Overview
At the Intermediate II level, students will deepen their fluency in American Sign Language, focusing on advanced conversational skills and complex sentence structures. In this course, students will explore nuanced topics such as expressing opinions, discussing current events, and navigating abstract concepts like emotions, ethics, and cultural identity. The course will emphasize the history and culture of deafness, the linguistic structure and visual, conceptual vocabulary of ASL. Building on their knowledge of classifiers and grammatical rules, students will further develop their ability to narrate stories, explain processes, and engage in debates using culturally appropriate ASL conventions. Students will learn expressive and receptive intermediate conversational skills. In addition to expanding vocabulary and mastering non-manual markers, students will also explore more sophisticated aspects of Deaf culture, including the impact of technology on the Deaf community, Deaf literature, and advocacy for Deaf rights. Upon completion of this course, students will have a strong foundation in American Sign Language and will be ready for advanced-level ASL study or immersive interaction within the Deaf community.
